Newborn Photography Safety: What Every Parent Should Know Before Booking - Daniella Photography

This is one of the most important questions you can ask — and as a parent myself, I completely understand why.

The short answer is yes — newborn photography is absolutely safe when it’s done properly.

But here’s the truth: your baby’s safety should always come before the shot.

Newborns are still so tiny and delicate. Their neck muscles aren’t developed, they can’t support themselves, and they rely entirely on us to keep them safe and comfortable.

As a newborn photographer, it’s my responsibility to understand exactly how to handle, position, and support your baby at all times — especially when creating those soft, curled, womb-like images you often see.

Before you book anyone, it’s important to know what to look for and what to ask. That’s what this guide is here to help you with — so you can choose someone you truly trust.

Is Newborn Photography Safe?

Yes — when your photographer is trained, experienced, and prioritises safety above everything else.

The risk comes when people try to recreate poses they’ve seen online without understanding how to do them safely.

There is no formal qualification required to call yourself a newborn photographer, which means anyone can pick up a camera and offer sessions.

That’s why I always encourage parents to ask questions. A professional, safety-focused photographer will never be offended by this — in fact, they should welcome it.

What to Look For When Choosing a Safe Newborn Photographer

When you’re choosing your photographer, safety should be clearly communicated — not hidden.

I believe you should feel completely reassured before your session even begins.

If a photographer isn’t openly talking about safety, or can’t clearly explain how they work, that’s something to pay attention to.

You want someone who is confident, experienced, and transparent about their process.

When you are narrowing down your choice, review the full list of questions to ask any photographer before you book. Those questions include safety, style, and what to expect. They help you compare photographers and feel confident before you commit.

Key Safety Precautions Every Photographer Should Take

There are a few non-negotiables when it comes to newborn safety.

Your baby’s head and neck must always be fully supported. Always.

I never leave a baby unattended — not even for a second.

When I’m shooting from above, I always use a camera strap so there is zero risk of anything falling.

The environment should feel calm, clean, and comfortably warm — never too hot.

Everything that comes into contact with your baby — wraps, fabrics, surfaces — is carefully checked to make sure it’s safe, soft, and secure.

Questions to Ask Your Newborn Photographer About Safety

You absolutely have the right to ask questions — and you should.

Ask about their training and experience in newborn safety and posing.

Ask if your baby will ever be left unsupported (the answer should always be no).

Ask whether they use composites for more complex poses, and how they ensure your baby is supported at all times.

You can also ask how they handle a baby who isn’t settling.

For me, sessions are always baby-led. If your baby needs feeding, cuddling, or a break, we pause. If they’re uncomfortable in a position, we simply move on.

There is never any pressure to “get the shot”.

Safe Newborn Posing: Support and Composites

Some of the poses you see online are not what they appear.

Take the “froggy pose” for example — where baby’s chin rests on their hands.

That is always a composite image. It’s created by combining multiple photos where a hand is supporting your baby the entire time.

At no point is a baby ever holding themselves in that position.

Personally, I keep my approach very natural and gentle. I don’t force babies into complex poses. I focus on what feels comfortable for them — because that’s when you get the most beautiful images anyway.

The Role of Props in Newborn Photography Safety

Props can be used safely — but only when they’re chosen and handled correctly.

Everything needs to be stable, soft, and secure. No sharp edges, no breakable materials, no risk of tipping.

If I use a basket or similar, it’s always heavily padded, and your baby is always supported.

You’ll also notice I keep things quite minimal. That’s intentional.

Your baby doesn’t need elaborate setups — they are already everything.

And most importantly, your baby’s airway and positioning are always being monitored. That’s something I’m constantly aware of throughout the entire session.

Training, Experience and Peace of Mind

There’s no formal qualification required to call yourself a newborn photographer — which is why experience and ongoing education matter so much.

I’ve spent years working with newborns, and I continue to invest in learning and refining my approach.

I’m also fully insured, which is another important layer of protection that many parents don’t think to ask about.

When you book a newborn session, you deserve to feel completely at ease. That only comes when you trust the person behind the camera.

Health, Illness and Vaccinations

This is something that often isn’t talked about enough — but it’s incredibly important.

Your newborn’s immune system is still developing, so taking precautions around illness matters.

Personally, I am vaccinated for whooping cough, and I take my health very seriously. If I am ever unwell, I will always reschedule — no exceptions.

I also ask families to let me know if anyone in the home is sick, so we can make the safest decision for your baby.

And please know — you should never feel uncomfortable asking your photographer about this.

It’s your baby. You are absolutely allowed to ask about vaccinations, hygiene, and health practices.

A professional will always respect that and answer openly.

Trust Your Instincts

This is a big one.

If something doesn’t feel right, say something.

You are your baby’s advocate, and your comfort matters just as much as your baby’s safety.

A good photographer will welcome your questions, not dismiss them.

The right experience should feel calm, supported, and reassuring from beginning to end.

Conclusion

Newborn photography should feel safe, gentle, and completely supported.

It comes down to experience, clear communication, and a photographer who always puts your baby first.

Ask the questions. Trust your instincts. And choose someone who makes you feel confident every step of the way.
