These are the newborn photoshoot tips I share with every family before their session — the ones that truly make the biggest difference.
If you’re a first-time parent, I’d start with tips 1, 3, 6, and 8. Those alone will completely shift how relaxed you feel going into your session — and that always shows in your photos.

1. Book early, then stay flexible
If you’re hoping to book me (or any newborn photographer you love), it’s best to secure your session while you’re still pregnant.
Newborn sessions are ideally captured within the first two weeks, when babies are naturally sleepier and more curled up.
That said, your due date is just a guide. I always book around your due date and then adjust once your baby arrives — so there’s no pressure if things don’t go exactly to plan (because they rarely do).

2. Choose the style that suits your family
There’s no right or wrong style — just what feels like you.
Studio sessions tend to be more posed, with wraps and a controlled setup. My style is more lifestyle-based, which means I come to your home and focus on natural connection, gentle guidance, and real moments.
Both are beautiful — the key is choosing a photographer whose work you genuinely connect with.
3. Keep outfits simple and well-fitting
This is one of the biggest things that elevates your photos.
Simple, well-fitting pieces in neutral tones always photograph beautifully. They don’t distract, and they age so much better over time.
I always guide my clients through what to wear (and provide a client wardrobe), because when outfits feel effortless and cohesive, everything else just falls into place.
If you want a clear plan for parents and siblings, read our what to wear guide. It covers outfit choices that help the whole family look their best on camera.

4. Tidy the frame, not the whole house
Please don’t stress about cleaning your entire home.
We only need one or two beautiful, uncluttered spaces — a bed, a couch, or a corner with soft light.
Before I arrive, I always suggest doing a quick scan of the background and moving anything distracting out of the frame. Even just popping things into another room or a laundry basket makes a huge difference.

5. Bring a small “settle kit”
Even though I bring everything I need, it’s helpful to have a few essentials close by.
Nappies, wipes, a spare outfit, and extra milk are key — newborns love to snack during sessions.
If older siblings are involved, snacks and a quiet activity can be a lifesaver. It keeps things calm and relaxed while I focus on your baby.

6. Feed right before, and expect top-ups
A full feed just before your session can really help your baby settle.
A good burp and a fresh nappy also go a long way.
And during the session? We follow your baby completely. If they need to feed again, we pause. There’s no rush — this is a baby-led experience.
7. Keep your newborn warm and comfortable
Comfort always comes first.
I’ll guide you on keeping the room warm so your baby stays cosy, especially when they’re wrapped or undressed.
If your baby is unsettled, a simple swaddle often works wonders. It helps them feel secure and calm — and honestly, it photographs beautifully too.

8. Use natural light and turn off overhead lights
I work almost entirely with natural light.
Window light is soft, flattering, and timeless — exactly what we want for newborn photos.
Overhead lights can create harsh shadows and odd colour tones, so I always switch them off.
If the light feels too strong, we simply soften it with sheer curtains or reposition slightly. It doesn’t need to be perfect — just gentle and even.
9. Prioritise safety over tricky poses
Your baby’s safety is always my number one priority.
Some of the more complex poses you see online are actually composites (multiple images edited together), so they’re never done in a single unsupported shot.
I keep everything natural, supported, and baby-led. If your baby isn’t comfortable in something, we simply move on — there is always another beautiful option.

10. Trust the process — I’ll guide you every step of the way
You don’t need to know how to pose, what to do with your hands, or how to settle your baby “perfectly”.
That’s my role.
I gently guide you through the entire session — from how to hold your baby, where to stand, how to interact — all in a way that feels natural and not forced.
With years of experience working with newborns and families, I know how to read the room, follow your baby’s cues, and create space for those genuine, connected moments.
All you need to do is show up, be present, and trust that I’ve got you.

Conclusion
The best newborn photoshoot tips are the ones that help you feel calm, prepared, and supported.
You don’t need to overthink it.
Keep things simple, trust the process, and focus on being present with your baby — that’s where the magic is.
If you’re looking for a relaxed, baby-led newborn photoshoot, I’d love to plan something beautiful for your family.
