A Plea to All Mothers – Exist in Photographs

Like you when I scroll through my phone I see hundreds of photos of my children, my husband, and everyone else but I am barely there. Don’t become a ghost in your family's history and memories. Existing in photos with our family is such a simple thing we can do but it's very often forgotten or pushed aside. When you look back at your children’s childhood you will want to remember what it felt to laugh with them, to be there with them at the moment. They will want to remember their mother, there, present, existing in each moment with them

The digital age has made photography so accessible for everyone. We have this amazing opportunity to document so many moments but we are still not in the frame. It is important to slow down and remind ourselves that we need to exist in these memories too.

If you don’t exist in photos for yourself, do it for them. Imagine your children looking back at photographs of their childhood in 10, 20 or 30 years time. Imagine them standing there with a smile on their face as they look lovingly at a photograph of them in your arms absorbing the way you are looking at them with your whole heart.

I have heard friends and family come up with hundreds of excuses of why they don’t want to book a family photoshoot Bondi Junction. From wanting to lose weight to life being too busy. From kids having lost all their front teeth or maybe dad just isn’t interested. These excuses get in the way, and your family photography Sydney never happens.

Think about this… When you look back at your own family portraits what do you want to see? Are you looking at them judging and wanting perfection or are you looking at them with nostalgia at the long-forgotten moments, feeling, and memories that come flooding back to you? When you look back at them do you enjoy seeing photos of you by yourself or do you prefer the ones where your parents are present… existing in the photos alongside you. Creating memories of that time in your life. The laughter, the cuddles the playful moments you have long forgotten.

How many thousands of photos have you captured on your phone or camera? How many of these moments have you printed or looked at recently? The incredible cameras on our smartphones allow us to capture so many moments in the past we would have not been able to. However, these moments are disappearing into a cloud and rarely looked back on.

Did you know that studies show that displaying family photos around your home boosts your children’s self-esteem? It helps your children internalize how important they are to you and how important their family is to them. It helps them to grow up feeling loved and gives them a sense of comfort by helping them feel safe, supported, and protected.

By printing our photos and looking back on them every day when we walk past these moments or touch them in an album or print we are creating powerful connections in our brains. These photographs remind us of our values and give us a sense of self-worth and belonging.

So, my plea to you is this… exist in your photographs. Make sure you are in photographs with your children every day doing what you love together. A book that a family photoshoot you have been thinking about doing but haven’t quite gotten around to for one reason or another. Get in front of the camera with your children. I promise you they will not look back at these pictures and say “I wish you waited till you lost more weight…” they will instead treasure these moments.

My last tip, print your photographs, display them in your home and enjoy them every day.
